How to choose a seafood place near you
- Decide on the dish first. Oyster bars, crawfish boil spots, Cajun kitchens and Mexican style mariscos all show up under “seafood near me”, and they are very different meals.
- Check the season. Live crawfish are mainly a January to July thing. Texas oysters are at their best from November to April, though restaurants buy from other states all year.
- Look at the current menu. Crawfish and oysters are often sold at market price that changes weekly. Use the place’s own website or a recent listing rather than an old photo.
- Ask where the seafood comes from if it matters to you. Gulf, East Coast and farmed oysters differ, and crawfish can come from Louisiana or Texas ponds.
Buying seafood safely
The FDA advises throwing away clams, oysters and mussels with cracked or broken shells, and using a tap test: live shellfish close when the shell is tapped.[27] It also advises pregnant women, children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems to avoid raw oysters, and says most seafood should be cooked to an internal temperature of 145°F.[27]
